Grants.gov Submission Procedures

1.    Getting Started

  • The University of Massachusetts has been registered with grants.gov and no further registration actions will be needed on the behalf of Principal Investigators for submission to grants.gov (Note: NIH requires individual registration with the NIH eRA Commons, also for helpful hints including how to avoid common errors goto Grants.gov Tips).

Download Required Software

PureEdge viewer - The PureEdge Viewer is a small, free program which will allow you to access, complete and submit applications electronically and securely on Grants.gov. Grants.gov is currently working with PureEdge to develop a unified download solution. However, in the meantime:

All users MUST download and install the PureEdge Viewer. Guidance on this process is available by accessing the "Help" button at the top of the screen or the Downloading and Installation Tips below.

General Grants.gov information may be found at  http://grants.gov/ .

2. Find and Download Applications and Instructions

Grants.gov provides organizations with the ability to search for Federal government-wide grant opportunities.  Some of these will have Grants.gov application packages available. If you don't know the opportunity or CFDA number, start with Search Grant Opportunities and narrow your search using the Browse by Category or Browse by Agency.

Search Grant Opportunities

Basic Search

Browse by Category

Browse by Agency

Advanced Search

NOTE: Once you find an opportunity for which you wish to apply, you will need to record the Funding Opportunity number or CFDA number and enter it manually on the Download Application Packages screen in the Apply for Grants section of Grants.gov OR Click on the Opportunity Title and Click “How to Apply.  If the opportunity is available   The Grants.gov application package should be listed for downloading.

When you click on Download Application, you will be asked if you want to receive notification of any changes in the application package.  We recommend that you enter your email address here.  This will help ensure that you always have the most up-to-date package.

Download the instructions also as they are often application-specific.

3. Apply for Grants

You will need the PureEdge Viewer in order to view application packages.

Apply Step 1: Complete the Selected Grant Application Package

You can complete the application offline — giving you the flexibility to complete grant applications when and where you want.  Everything you need to know is included in the application package and instructions.

We understand that certain forms may not be able to be completed by the Principal Investigator, in such cases these forms will be completed by the fiscal during the review process of the application package.

Please see our Fact Sheet for University information (Duns#, EIN #, Indirect cost rates, etc.) http://www.umass.edu/research/ogca/fact/hpfact2k.htm

For Help Filling out a Grants.gov Application including a sample SF424 Form and for helpful hints including how to avoid common errors goto Grants.gov Tips.

Apply Step 2: Submit a Completed Grant Application Package to OGCA

When you are ready to submit the completed application, you simply save the PureEdge file (see secyion 2 - Software) to a CD and bring it to OGCA with a complete, signed IPF (http://www.umass.edu/research/ogca/forms/ogcaforms.htm). Grant applications should be submitted to OGCA 3 to 5 working days before the application is due at the sponsoring agency.  Your proposal will not be reviewed until you provide a complete copy of the proposal.

4. Review and Submission Process

The appropriate administrator will review the proposal and contact you with any concerns or issues before OGCA submits the proposal to the sponsor through Grants.gov.  (See staff assignments http://www.umass.edu/research/ogca/staff/fapspon.htm).
